WEEK 2
Part A
1. The Adean Indians live in the South Americas Andes mountains, this mountain region covers countries such as Columbia, Ecuador and Chile. In Colombia it is it is more like a forest , it tends to be more rainy and wet. While in Ecuador it is is more of a dry and hot climate, in Chile it is has the hottest climate of 71 degrees. The Zulu people are located in South Africa so it means their seasons are the opposite of ours. According to brandsouthafrica.com they have summer during October - April and winter May- September and they define the region as " subtropical location, moderated by ocean on two sides of the triangle-shaped country and the altitude of the interior plateau, account for the warm temperate conditions so typical of South Africa ".During the summer it is very hot and humid with the typical summer thunderstorm and during the winter it is warm at night and cool at night.

2. One physical adaptation the Zulu have is that they have more melanin in their skin which protects them from the harsh sun, according to Medicine.net melanin is described as " The pigment that gives human skin, hair, and eyes their color." It is known that melanin protects from the harsh sun and its rays. If your skin produces more melanin than you are more protected from the harmful rays. The adean indians are able to carry more oxygen in their red blood cells and this helps them with the locations high elevation. The air is thinner the higher you go up and this allows them to have the correct amount of oxygen they need.
3. One thing has helps the Zulu people is having children is important and it is looked down when a woman does not have children. Children are seen as free labor and helpers for the tribe and they are needed to keep the labor system in tack. For the adean indians they use animals such as llamas to help them. The llamas are a means of transportation for them. They transport people and also goods. The way we see cars they see llamas in that way.

4. The Zulu people are of African decent because the tribe is located in South Africa. The Adeans are latinos since they are located in South America. I chose this by geographic location and by how that location is categorized by race. Personally I believe that race is a folk taxonomy and do not believe it is a real thing.
5.I personally believe more in adaptions because it is more of what the environment is and how you can adapt. I do not believe in race and in my Anthro 101 class was taught that is is a folk taxonomy. There is no race gene and we are all the same DNA wise. We do have different environments and that does make us a little different.

The Andean people actually live in a more specific environment than you have described here. In particular, they live in high altitude environments. That area is not heavily forested and it is more arid. The high altitude description is important because it means this population is exposed to the stress of hypoxia, or low oxygen pressure.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to the environment of the Zulu, let's keep in mind that "environment" goes beyond just weather. Part of that environment is the level of UV radiation from the sun, a higher level because they are located near the equator. As you discuss an adaptation to this stress, it should have been included in that first paragraph.
Good discussion of physical adaptation of more melanin in the skin of the Zulu as an adaptation to high levels of UV radiation. With regard to the Andean population, you are correct that they carry more oxygen in their blood stream. How do they do that? A little more explanation was needed here, describing the increased level of hemoglobin in the blood that allows Andeans to transport more oxygen per heart beat.
I agree that the use of llamas as pack animals or transportation (as well as milk and possibly meat) are good cultural adaptations for the Andean people.
With regard to your cultural adaptation for the Zulu: Isn't reproduction a biological/physical trait? A cultural adaptation will be the use of tools or behavioral/social practices, not natural biological processes. For the Zulu, you could discuss their clothing choices, how they build their houses to stay cool, their subsistence choices, and other behaviors that help them survive in the heat and aridity of Southern Africa.
"Africa" is a geographical location/continent, not a race. There are many races that live in Africa, so we can't use it to indicate just one. A more accurate choice would be "black" or "negroid". Likewise, "Latino" is an ethnic group, defined by evolutionary history and cultural practices. Don't confuse that with "race", which uses only external, superficial traits to define its categories. The Andeans could be classified as "indian" or even "mongoloid".
Careful about your word choices. Science isn't about "believing" anything. It is about facts and evidence.
Otherwise, good explanation and conclusion. Well done as well carrying what you have learned from your Anthro 101 course into your 103 class! :-)
I agree with you when you say, we are all the same in a sense but at the same time i think that the racial classification gives the reader a better understanding as to why a specific group has specific customs. Racial classifications can also show you how physical adaptations take place.
